"I don't think I can sing" are the words that Barb said to her Dad when he encouraged her to check out a local Sweet Adeline chorus in Palm Harbor in 1994. Though she sang in the church choir while growing up, aside from using a hairbrush as a microphone and singing in front of the mirror, she had no previous vocal experience. So on a hot Florida night in August she set out alone to her first chorus rehearsal and has been hooked ever since.
Soon after, her Mom joined the chorus and eventually even her teenage daughter tried it. Barb was also in a Quartet named "Essence" from 1998-2002. They won the "Best Novice Quartet Award" in Region 9 in 1999. "I've learned everything I know from Region 9 and the exceptional educators, coaches, and Sweet Adeline mentors I've been blessed to work with".
A stay-at-home Mom with two teenagers, she's been married for 23 years to her college sweetheart. "He has always been so encouraging of my barbershop hobby." Barb is active in her church and has been a Sunday School teacher for many years.
Barb feels the best part of this hobby is the wonderful friends she has made and the privilege of performing for an audience. "If I can move one person emotionally, or encourage one young person to become a Sweet Adeline, it just makes my passion for singing all the greater!" |
